A Still Life of Flowers and Gestures
2026
Single channel video installation (colour, sound)

In diplomatic settings, flowers are no longer merely natural objects, but have been transformed into symbolic objects within a language, used to moderate and mediate emotions.
The work draws from hundreds of diplomatic press photographs, focusing on the often-overlooked floral arrangements on tables. By removing facial details and retaining only the flowers, gestures, and sections of the tabletop, the imagery shifts from event documentation to a contemplation of symbols. All source material is converted to a halftone print effect, returning the images to the texture of printed media, and presented as a sequence of single frames.
The soundtrack uses a music box rendition of Liszt’s Liebestraum. The spiritual ideals of Romanticism alluded to in the original piece are simplified into a light, regular mechanical rhythm, leaving behind a gentle reverberation stripped of its original context. This sonic state runs parallel to the institutionalized floral imagery on screen, together presenting a form of symbolic viewing that feels compressed and delayed.
