Jess Lau Ching-wa (b. 1991, Hong Kong) is a moving image artist working across video, animation, and installation. Her practice is grounded in repetitive, hand-mediated processes, including frame-by-frame erasure, retracing, physical assembly, and durational recording. Through these methods, time, memory, and bodily traces are made materially present. Treating bodily labor as a unit of temporal measurement, Lau explores how personal experience and emotion are preserved within shifting physical and digital landscapes.

Lau’s work operates at the intersection of the private and the public, the analogue and the digital. She frequently collects personal writings, oral memories, and diverse archives, including family photographic negatives, medical scans, press images, obsolete newspapers, and digital street views, treating them as volatile sites of erosion and reconstruction. Through stop-motion animation, essayistic video narratives, and the separation of image and sound, her practice continually probes the instability of images and words as carriers of memory, reflecting on how individual perception navigates shifting environments and collective history.

Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Ars Electronica (Austria), Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Inside-Out Art Museum (Beijing), Two Temple Place (London), Tai Kwun Contemporary, West Kowloon Cultural District, and Ben Brown Fine Arts (Hong Kong). She was awarded the TERAYAMA Shuji Prize at the Image Forum Festival (2025), the Nanying Award (2022), and the Gold Award at the 27th IFVA (2022). She was an artist-in-residence at Tai Kwun Contemporary (2020).
